As I'm sure that Dunaway is grateful that I'm finally writing another post, I'm certainly grateful that we're only a couple of weeks away from pre-season NFL and we're in the heat of camp! I keep thinking that these things will finally divert some attention away to the obvious "hot topic" of Michael Vick. I keep saying that I'm sick of hearing about Vick.

Now, before anyone starts piling on...I don't condone what he's been accused of doing by any means - I've owned dogs most of my life and they've always been part of the family, but I'm just sick of all the talk about it. There are so many other things to focus on now that it's almost August. My fear is that the fact that it's almost August will only escalate the topic of conversation even more (if that's even possible). Have we gotten so shallow as a society that it's more interesting to talk about that rather than guess who the rookie of the year is going to be based on performances at camp?...who are the 'players to watch for' in this upcoming NFL season?...it's sadly getting to the point that I'm almost looking forward to the tired old subject of if this is Favre's last year...how bad is that? Most people that know me will agree that I hate that topic...leave him alone until he says he's done!!!!

Anyway, not a lengthy earth shattering post, but it begs the question...can we please move on and discuss just sports? I'm not into the sensationalism...just football - maybe that's why I don't listen to all radio programs around this town that claim to be sports talk...things that make you go hmmmm.

I think our fascination with the ugliness of the Vick situation just shows how messed up we are as a culture. We crave celebrities and heros that we can build up just so we can destroy them. When the Vick situation seems more like a media feeding frenzy than a funeral, we have truly devolved as a people.

The only thing I hate worse than the sensationalist coverage of the Vick situation is the smug, self-righteous venom flying from the mouth of every journalist with a pen or microphone. Why do journalist have to continue to say how morally outraged they are at Vicks alleged actions? They keep going on and on about it like we who are watching don't realize how bad dogfighting is. Don't they know that EVERY sane person on earth is against pitting two animals against each other in a battle to the death for gambling purposes?! Tell the media to shut up about Vick and give us more information about how Brodie Croyle is going to turn the Chiefs into a superbowl contender! Roll Tide.
